Yet, another year has passed by. You have set so many goals for 2008. How many of them did you really achieve?
Before continuing to read this post, please take a couple of minutes and write down the goals you’ve set for the last year, and check each goal you’ve succeeded in.
If you have achieved all of your goals for 2008, then you don’t have to read the rest of this post. But if you haven’t achieved all of the goals you have set for 2008 and if you’ve started to come up with excuses in your mind, then keep reading.
EXCUSES, EXCUSES, EXCUSES
People always have and will always have excuses for their failures. Didn’t we start making up excuses for our failures since we were kids?
Didn’t we have so many excuses for bad grades at school? Didn’t we always complain about the corporate system while working corporate? Didn’t we blame the others and said “nobody supports entrepreneurs” while trying to build a business?
Didn’t we come up with every possible excuse during our lives for our own failures?
STOP and THINK for a second!

Calm down, take a deep breath, and think. You have come up with so many excuses for your failures, right? I was gonna do that in 2008, and this happened, I was gonna do this in 2008, but then that happened. Economy went down, gas prices kept climbing, etc. etc. Now, leave all the excuses aside, and think again.
Why couldn’t you achieve your goals in 2008? Why did you fail?
I’m not asking for an explanation. Answer these questions to yourself. Don’t lie to yourself, and try to find the honest answers. If you can’t figure out the reasons for your failure, and accept them, there’s no way you will learn a lesson from them, and move on. That’s why, take your time, and think about these.
My job is internet, in fact my life is internet. I see so many people trying to make money online every single day, and they fail. If your goal is also to make money online, and if you couldn’t achieve your goal during 2008, here are some tips that might help for 2009.
5 Reasons You Fail To Make Money Online
- You know everything: This is extremely dangerous. Self confidence, personal branding is different, lying to yourself is different. At some conferences, meetings, introductions, and at different occasions, people have called me “the internet marketing guru”, or “the internet marketing expert”. When this happens, I kindly let them know that I’m not the internet marketing guru nor the expert. I am still learning tons of new things every single day. And I’ve never caught the “I know everything” illness. I’m open minded and dying to learn more unique and creative online marketing methods.
Let the 2009 be a fresh start. You can keep lying to people, but sit down, be honest with yourself, and make your self improvement plan for 2009. All you need is “internet”. If you really want it, you can become an expert in online marketing, or in a programming language, or webdesign, or anything you can imagine of. You don’t need expensive ebooks or courses. Everything is available free online. No reason for another excuse, right?
- You are not the DOER: (Just do it !) If you don’t do it, and if you don’t test it, you will not be successful online. Do you have any idea how many online marketing methods I’ve tested and failed before making my first dollar online? I’ve never said “This is not for me”, and I’ve kept testing it. I have had so many sleepless nights testing new ideas online. So many people fail because they only read great ideas at blogs and forums, and they actually never put the time in to fully embrace the idea by testing it. Be a doer in 2009, not the talker.
- I need help syndrome:I have helped so many people to make money online. I receive tens of questions every single day through my several blogs about making money online. 99% of these questions are about me helping them to eat my fish, not to help them to learn “how to catch a fish”. I believe in KARMA, helping each other, supporting people in need, I believe in luck, but remember this is online marketing. You don’t have 911 to call anytime you are in need. You have to start to figuring out some stuff by yourself. If you send me an email or any other blogger saying “I’d like to make money online, please help me”, you will not succeed in this business, trust me. Come up to me with projects, smart questions, ideas, then I will help. In fact, you will find many smart people to help you. So don’t ask me to catch the fish, clean it, cook it and serve it to you, ask me how I catch the fish. Kapish?
- You don’t change your mindset: Making money online is different than a 9 to 5 job. After a great education, you can get a good job working at corporate. You don’t have to improve yourself a lot. Obey the rules, play the corporate game, do whatever is asked from you, and you can climb the corporate ladder, and become successful in your career. I am very sorry, but unfortunately, the game is different online. You have to improve yourself every single day. You have to follow the trends, blogs, read more, learn new techniques and be on top of everything all the time. Many people think internet marketers make so much money without doing anything (4 hour work week anybody?). But the truth is the opposite. Even if you have a website making money well, it will fail sometimes in the future, if you don’t implement the new techniques, and update constantly. Changing your mindset about making money online might be a good move for 2009, if you haven’t already done so.
- You are a mediocre thinker: Mediocre thinking might be another reason for your failure in making money online. Estimates show that 90 out of 100 people who try to make money online fail. Only 10 left making money online. But 9 out of these 10 people are also little above average. They are mediocre thinkers. They follow the masses, they do whatever the other online marketers do. They might still make a comfortable living with the money they make online. But only 1 person out of 100 is what I call the magician. Creativity, and thinking outside the box will make you that person. You don’t have a choice. Either be a mediocre thinker, or start being creative and start setting trends instead of following them.
These are the 5 important reasons you fail to make money online. There are many other reasons also. Start adding your reasons to the list, and make a fresh start for 2009. Make it happen this year, and don’t wait for the next one.
Or after reading this, get all pumped up, but then forget about it, don’t implement any of these tips into your business life. Don’t worry, I will write another similar post next year with a title of “X Reasons You Failed in 2009 to Make Money Online” anyways. So, wait for that post. It’s your choice.

Excellent post Ahmet. Looking back I achieved most of my goals in 2008. I also read the “4 hour workweek” book. I do believe that it might mislead the newbies. Hardworking really pays off if you want to make money online. Your post was insightful; I Stumbled so that it spreads like a virus
Wish you a happy and successful new year!
